What is Git?

Git is a distributed version control system.

In simple words, Git helps you:

  • Track changes in your code

  • Save different versions of a project

  • Work with others without overwriting each other’s work

Every time you make a meaningful change, Git allows you to record a snapshot of your project. You can always go back to an older version if something breaks.

Unlike older systems, Git doesn’t depend on a single central server. Every developer has a complete copy of the project and its history on their own machine.

Git Basics and Core Terminologies

Before jumping into commands, it’s important to understand some core concepts.

Repository (Repo)

A repository is where your project lives.
It contains your code and the entire history of changes.

Commit

A commit is a saved snapshot of your project at a specific point in time.
Each commit has a message explaining what changed.

Branch

A branch is an independent line of development.
The default branch is usually called main or master.

Merge

Merging means combining changes from one branch into another.

Clone

Cloning creates a local copy of an existing repository.

Remote

A remote is a version of your repository hosted online (like on GitHub).

Staging Area

This is where you prepare files before committing them.
You choose exactly what goes into the next commit.

Common Git Commands (With Meaning)

These are the commands you’ll use most often in real projects.

Initialize a Repository

git init

Creates a new Git repository in your project folder.


Check Status

git status

Shows modified files, staged files, and untracked files.


Add Files to Staging Area

git add filename

or

git add .

Prepares files to be committed.


Commit Changes

git commit -m "Meaningful commit message"

Saves your changes permanently in Git history.


View Commit History

git log

Shows all previous commits with details.


Create a New Branch

git branch branch-name

Switch to a Branch

git checkout branch-name

(or git switch branch-name in newer versions)


Merge a Branch

git merge branch-name

Merges another branch into the current branch.


Connect to Remote Repository

git remote add origin repository-url

Push Code to Remote

git push origin main

Pull Latest Changes

git pull

Fetches and merges updates from the remote repository.
